My friend and I are reading through Luke right now. We take two chapters per day and then discuss what God is showing us. I love how Bible study works in small groups like that, with the Spirit moving.
The Word of God teaches him one thing, and speaks to me in a different way.
Both ways are right. The Bible isn’t contradicting itself. It is living and active (Hebrews 4:12) and I am witnessing it through this study.
I love reading about Jesus and seeing the way He made the most out of every opportunity. But one phrase jumped off the page and grabbed me this morning.
“Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” (Luke 18:41)
What if Jesus, the son of God, God in human flesh, looked you in the eye and asked “What do you want me to do for you?”
In this case, He was looking into blind eyes. This was a beggar who couldn’t see. But Jesus could. The beggar cried out multiple times and so Jesus responded with a question. He didn’t ask the question cause He didn’t know what the blind man needed.
Why then?
I almost just typed why I thought Jesus asked the question, and then I stopped and hit backspace 12 times.
I can take a few guesses why an all-knowing God would ask a question that didn’t need asked. Even a child could have guessed what the blind man needed by looking at him.
I believe the reason this simple question jumped off the page at me was because I felt like Jesus was asking me the same thing.
“What do you want me to do for you?”
For awhile this morning, I just sat there. I had no response. The first few thoughts surrounded the idea that I wanted Him to love me, and very clearly, that still small voice said, “I already do.”
The question echoed again. “What do you want me to do for you?”
I don’t know Father. So many times, I am the one that asks you for things. Good things. Petty things. Important things. Eternal things. But here You are, the God-Man, who was seated with the Father at the Creation of time, asking me.
“What do you want me to do for you?”
What is your answer?
After 16 hours pondering this question, I still am unsure what to say. Unsure of what to ask for, because my meager requests seem insufficient. (I know in my mind they are not – that He cares for what I need and He wants to take care of His children, I get that.)
Yet He has left me completely in awe of a God who comes face to face with a man who cannot see.
Let that question be your focus, and it will pierce your heart, in a way only the King of Kings can do.
