So many times as I read the Bible, I wish that I could have seen Jesus facial expressions as He walked this earth.
As I was reading Mark 11, I was trying my hardest to picture the disciples expression. Look at what Jesus asked them to do.
” He *sent two of His disciples, 2 and *said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.”
Interesting assignment isn’t it? Go get someone else’s donkey and bring it back to me. If anyone asks, just say the Lord needs it.
Jesus wasn’t stealing. He made it clear the donkey would be brought back when He was done with it.
This passage baffled me. I did some google searches cause I had some questions. Was it common in that day and age to go borrow donkeys from random people? I couldn’t find anything saying so.
Had Jesus talked with the donkey’s owner awhile ago and set up this exchange? For some reason, I don’t think so. Wouldn’t Mark point that out, if that was the case?
Despite my questions, we learn a lot from this small trip. I love the disciples obedience. Take a look at what they do.
“4 They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they *untied it. 5 Some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 They spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission.”
The plan went down just as Jesus said it would, and the Son of Man fulfilled the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9.
Yet it all seems odd to me. Amidst the peculiarity, a very clear lesson to mind.
Sometimes, God asks us to do strange things. Sometimes, He calls us to a place that doesn’t make much sense.
How do we respond?
I want to respond just like the disciples did, and take the steps Jesus asks me to take. By doing so we get to see firsthand the way God intends us to live our lives. Nothing is more special, no matter what circumstances we go through on that journey.
So what donkey is He asking you to go borrow?
