Dreams can be funny things.
A couple nights ago, I woke up from the funniest dream. It was Saturday night (in my dream) and my Mom was inviting me to attend church with them (in Texas) the next morning.
The two service times she gave me were 7am and 2pm. Those are odd times for a church service to begin, and even if i left the moment of that conversation, I wouldn’t be able to make it to Texas in time!
Dreams are funny things.
But when we wake up, we realize that they were far-fetched and have no bearing on our lives. We can dismiss them and go about our daily routine. What happens when these crazy tales that were created somewhere deep inside our brain, take place in the middle of the day?
You know what I’m talking about. The stories we tell ourselves when times are tough. No one loves us. I can’t do that. I don’t have a chance.
What do we do with the battle in our mind that takes place before the big meeting with our boss? We are sure he has bad news for us. We have no confidence going into such an intimidating encounter.
What stories do we tell ourselves before the big game with a rival who seems better and always beats us? We already feel like we know what will happen, even if it isn’t necessarily true.
What happens when the stories we are making up in our head, seem more like reality than dreams?
It’s much harder to convince ourselves that these stories aren’t true, isn’t it?
So what do we do with them, when we can’t just tell ourselves that they were ‘just a dream?’
We go to Scripture to remind ourselves, how God sees us. One of my favorite places to turn to in these times is Psalm 139. Maybe it will be a place of rest and comfort for you too. And perhaps those stories that you tell yourself, will become more like unrealistic dreams that you can dismiss as easily as that 7am church service in Texas.
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[a]
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.

5 things we get by serving others
