Learning to Be Content So We CAN Do All Things Through Christ

Philippians 4:13 is such a well known verse. If you have even a few Scripture verses in your memory, it is likely that verse is one of them. Possibly you’ve uttered its words over and over as you work hard to accomplish something that appears “too much” in life.

If you view the verse in context, you’ll see that before we get the promise that we can do everything through Christ who strengthens us, we are first challenged to a level of contentment.

The secret to being Content

Here are Paul’s words as found in Philippians 4:11b-13.

I’ve learned to be content in whatever situation I’m in. I know how to live in poverty or prosperity. No matter what the situation, I’ve learned the secret of how to live when I’m full or when I’m hungry, when I have too much or when I have too little. I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.

Temporal Things

While I wholeheartedly believe that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, I believe we could do it even better if we first learned how to be content in all things. To be honest, that’s not really “the American way.” There’s always something out there to try and pacify our discontentment; however a pacifier is only temporary.

Encouragement for today

I encourage you today to firmly hold on to the One who can strengthen you for every necessary Heavenly task, but even more strongly encourage you to meditate on the word “contentment,” and as Paul challenged himself to do, desire to truly move into a realm where you discover the joy of being content in Christ in the midst of whatever situation in which you have been placed.

5 things we get by serving others

Jesus instructs us to lead through servant leadership. When we obey His commands there are things that we get out of it. Learn what those are in our free guide.
