Most schools offer a band program. Some schools offer an orchestra program; but few schools offer a full youth orchestra program. A full orchestra includes percussion, brass, and woodwinds.
Lima Area Youth Orchestra
In Lima, area youth are able to take advantage of such a program via the Lima Area Youth Orchestra. This long standing organization, comprised of top notch musicians, starts each season with try-outs in October. They, then, practice weekly through the winter months, and perform concerts for the public and area elementary school students.
Approximately 60 7th-12th graders, representing 18 area schools, comprised the 2017-2018 Orchestra group, or LAYO as it is known to the members.
But what causes this organization to stand out from others across the country?
These students get to experience top notch conducting talent and work with challenging musical selections, all for free.
Free to the students…thanks to area organizations and individuals who contribute financially because they believe in what LAYO can build into these individuals. The Lima Noon Optimist Club is one of the top supporting organizations.
The Lima Noon Optimist
“The youth are our next generation”, said Jess Good, Lima Noon Optimist LAYO Representative. “It’s important that we support the youth in positive ways. The Lima Youth Orchestra offers young musicians a great chance to get really good instruction. We [at the Lima Noon Optimist Club] see great value in that.”

“The Lima Noon Optimist Club is such an incredible supporter of LAYO.” said Dr. Travis Jurgens, LAYO Music Director. “We wouldn’t be able to this this without them. It is because of the Lima Noon Optimist Club that this program is free of charge to the students.”
Professional Directors
Dr. Travis Jurgens, ONU Symphony Music Director, directed the 2017-2018 Youth Orchestra. It was assistant directed and managed by Mr. J Wallace Bluhm, Lima Senior High School Director of Bands.

The students prepared, and performed 3 professional concerts, and finished their season with an awards banquet, sponsored by the Lima Noon Optimists. Students are eligible for scholarships, as well.
