In 1995, The Children’s Defense Fund created Freedom Schools to teach literacy, civic engagement, and more. At the recent session of the West Ohio Annual United Methodist Conference, held at Lakeside Marblehead, it was announced that nine freedom schools are underway in West Ohio, serving 708 scholars.
What are Freedom Schools
Freedom Schools are a six week summer enrichment program designed to encourage children to fall in love with reading, as well as increase self esteem and generate a more positive attitude when it comes to learning. Due to the time involved, dedication, and perseverance to run a freedom school, active sites received accolades during the ministries awards event at the recent conference.
Lima Trinity Freedom School was among the leadership teams being honored. Pastor Megan Croy, of Trinity United Methodist Church, and Pastor Bryan Bucher of Shawnee United Methodist church were honored. Pastor Croy says, “Lima Area Freedom Schools is a partnership between many area churches, community organizations, the City of Lima, and the Lima City Schools. Andrea Guice and Lisa Bradley have worked with the program and scholars all 3 years and have made it what it is.”
The Lima Trinity Freedom School is held in June and July at South Science and Technology Magnet School, and is open to students in K-8th grade. It runs June 18-July 26, Monday- Thursday with some Friday field trips included in the schedule. Space is limited to 70 students.
