Many times, as I arrive back to the TV-station from covering a few events, I will try and bring everything in from the car at one time.
That means I am holding an empty water bottle that needs to be thrown away, a couple of rosters or programs, my cell phone (if I haven’t wisely put it in my pocket), a $5 umbrella, and my $8000 camera that we bought in 2009 (currently valued at less than that).
Many times, its the cheaper items, or the trash, that are more cumbersome to carry, putting the more valuable items at a higher risk of dropping out of my hand and shattering on the ground.
Why do I do this? Why do I put important things in peril, just so that lesser items can be brought in, and many times discarded?
We do that in life too, don’t we?
We invest lots of time and energy into some things that really aren’t that important. I know some nights, I try and hurry the kids off to bed so I can just have some time to myself, which ends up being spent watching sports, reading or playing video games.
Why?
Sometimes when I am working, I will think of 5 emails that need to be sent, and so I pause an important project, or stop writing ‘Points of Life’ for a few minutes, and attend to those emails. Then it takes me some time to re-focus on what was more important in the first place.
Why?
We live in a distracted world. How can we become less distracted? The book of Psalms lets us know in its very first page.”Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
Some things we carry are blatantly not good for us. Some people we hang around with could be described as being scoffers. Other activities in our lives may be fine, but cause us to lose our focus. Still some things are good things, but not the best things. I know in my life, priorities come into focus when I am delighting myself in the law of the Lord and meditating on it day and night.
When my time with Him is consistent and has depth, the trash and distractions that so easily weigh me down, fall away, and I am left holding the most important things.
This is what I need to focus on this week. My prayer is, that you will join me in that focus
