Have you ever been in an emotional situation, in need of instant encouragement, when you turn on the radio — only to hear the perfect song to keep you moving through your tough situation?
That is how I first discovered Plumb back in 2012 when her hit “Need You Now” was released, causing this relatively unknown, yet veteran, unique vocalist to appear on the Christian music scene in a big way.
“Need You Now” hit #1 on several radio charts, showcasing Plumb’s powerful, big vocals, while reminding us that God is there for us in the middle of our life obstacles, and will walk with us through them.
Obstacles appear at times and in ways we don’t expect, so when I was handed a major life obstacle in early November, 2017, I shouldn’t be surprised that God would again use Plumb to serve as the needed-at-the-moment lifeline to get me through to the next day, and the next day, and the next…. Her latest release, a 5 song EP, hit iTunes and other streaming sources in early November.
But I know I’ll be okay with Your hand holding mine
So take all my resistance
Oh God I need Your grace
One step and then the other
Show me the way
Show me the way!
That’s the bridge to Plumb’s latest billboard hit, “God Help Me”, the title track to the EP. The lyrics could be applied to anyone’s difficult and anxiety-producing situation. For me, the song became my “song on repeat” as I was trying to navigate a plan through breast cancer. That is, until I purchased the entire EP, and found what I predict to be Plumb’s next big hit: “I’m Not Alone.”
I’m not alone, I’m not alone
Oh, God you’re right here
I’m not alone, I’m not alone
Even outside of a song, these words are strong and powerful for anyone walking through a trial, but add in Plumb’s tender voice and just the right tones of instrumentals, and it’s the start of a prayer.
Jesus, Jesus
My eyes, they start to see, a beautiful
Unfolding, it’s unfolding
The “prayer” continues with, what I consider, a very realistic look at a life so many of us have lived: darkness…closing in. I have personal experience of calling the name “Jesus” and recognizing that darkness fleeing, so the first time I heard this verse I knew I’d found a song on which I could stand; words through which I could cry out to God to carry me through my situation. And He has. Just like He has and will continue to do so for you.
Plumb cries out too, with her trademark, powerfully big vocals. And then all goes quiet, almost hollow sounding, leading into the bridge:
And I will try to run and hide
So come and find me every time
Ever since “Need You Now”, I have appreciated Tiffany Lee’s candid and realistic look at life. We live in a fallen world, and none are free of struggles. It can be natural to want to walk away from it all. But we are loved by a God who will leave the rest of His flock to come and find us in our place of hiding…as Plumb says…every time.
“I’m Not Alone” is one of 5 songs on the EP God Help Me. It’s a sampler of the singer’s full length release, expected later this year. In 2017, Plumb celebrated an impressive 20th year in the singing industry. Her upcoming release will be her 7th album.
