An often overlooked relationship is the one we have with our children. We all lead crazy busy lives, but sometimes the thing they need most from us is time. One way to connect with them is to make dinner together. Recently, Jeremiah joined his two kids, Connor and Camryn, in the kitchen to create a fun dessert: a delicious Wave the Flag Cake.
How to make a flag cake
The recipe is really simple. You will need:
- 2 12oz packages of pound cake
- ½ pint of blueberries
- 16 ounces of strawberries, divided
- 1 container (about 12oz) of strawberry glaze
- 2 tubs of cool whip
- ½ cup of powdered sugar
- 4oz of cream cheese
- 1 tsp of vanilla

To begin, cut the pound cake into 1 inch squares and lay them evenly in a 9×13 baking dish. Next dice ⅔ of your strawberries and mix them into the strawberry glaze. Spread this mixture evenly over the pound cake and set aside.
Using a hand mixer, combine the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Fold this mixture into your cool whip. Next, spread this topping on top of the glazed pound cake.
Finally, it’s time to design our flag cake. First, cut the remaining ⅓ of your strawberries into thin slices. Next, lay your blueberries on top of the cool whip in the shape of the starfield of the United States flag. Finally, lay your sliced strawberries in even rows to make the stripes.
A gift from the Lord
One of the most precious things God gave us is our children. Psalm 127:3 puts it this way:
Later, in Proverbs 23:24 it says,
The thing is, it starts with us. Children honor God often because they learned that behavior from us. No one is perfect, and it’s easy to get into ruts with our schedule. Make time for your kids as often as you can. Lead by example so that one day they, too, will grow up honoring God.
